PAST PROJECTS / JUVENILE PRISON EXHIBIT
The Need
During this project the ex-gang members were each given a chance to create something they had never created before using an art medium completely new to them.
Building a spirit through sculpture.
The Project
Juvenile offenders attended one of three different classes offered by Project Palette. Each student created something new by using clay, wire, paints and other art materials. During the classes each participant was taught how to implement ways of "thinking outside the box" and to find new, non-violent, avenues to express their emotions.
This young man is building a sculpture of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The Outcome
The San Antonio Art League Museum loaned the teenagers pedestals so their artwork could be displayed in a museum type setting on the prison grounds. Family, prison staff and the local press were invited to an opening reception for the artists. The event received praise from the community, prison system and participants. The teenagers reported developing a new sense of success and accomplishment after completing the project and seeing their work presented in such a professional way.
Natural born talent. This is the second painting this young man has ever created.
