PAST PROJECTS / JUVENILE PRISON MURAL
The Need
Officials in Texas knew the young offenders at juvenile prisons in Bexar County had deep-rooted anger and rage. They sought help in providing a positive way for the ex-gang members to express their feelings.
A reflection of hope in the creativity of young juvenile prisoners.
The Project
Project Palette brought its vision of peace, tolerance and non-violent conflict resolution to several long-term projects at the juvenile prisons. A mural was created by incarcerated teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17. The theme of the project was "Honor, Faith, Hope, Peace and Family," enabling the juveniles to realize they must know and understand the past in order to build a successful future. During the project, the ex-gang members worked on team building and collaboration as well as their artistic skills.

Teamwork.

The Outcome
The results were extremely positive, not only for the young artists but also for the community. Project Palette was commended for creating a unique learning experience for the offenders. The young prisoners were shown how to use art to tap into and express their diverse backgrounds and innermost feelings.

A job well done.
