PAST PROJECTS / SARAJEVO
The Need
Sarajevo was torn apart by war in 1992. It remained under siege until 1996. The city sustained considerable damage and many residents were killed. Food and shelter were scarce making creative expression nearly impossible to access or afford.
Even among the devastation of war creativity thrives.
The Project
Project Palette delivered donated art supplies to working artists and patients at a pediatric care hospital in Sarajevo shortly after the war in Bosnia ended. It was the first time many of the children had ever even held a crayon.
An artillery shell is transformed into art by a local artisan.
The Outcome
The results were overwhelmingly positive for the children and local artists. Hospital workers reported seeing a dramatic improvement in their patients. The local artists used the art supplies to work through the stress and grief caused by war and create new avenues for dialogues for peace.
